VC Tech Stack & Westly Group Hiring

Mic’s Newsletter (Early VC) - 4th Edition

Hi all! Hope everyone had an awesome Super Bowl weekend... what a game 🤯

In other news, excited to share that this newsletter is now a community of 550+! 🎉 Thanks so much for reading/checking out the job board, and for all the awesome feedback 🙂

I also want to shout out our $50 give-away that closes on Feb. 19th (see bottom of this email) - we have fewer than 10 people entered so chances are good for you to win a gift card of your choice 😉

💹 With that, here’s what we have for today:

Some Exciting News.. The Westly Group Team is Growing!

The Westly Group is hiring again! 🥳 We’re looking for an Associate (2-4 YOE, Core Fund) and a Senior Associate (6-8 YOE, Seed Fund) to join our investments team - both roles will be based in the Bay Area, and we’ll be hiring on a rolling basis 🤗 Check out our careers page for more info and links to apply!

P.S. Our 2024 Summer Associate application is still open! Deadline to apply is Feb. 18th 🙂

New Roles This Week

Internships 🤓
Analyst Roles 😍
Associate/Senior Associate 😄
Operational Roles 🤠

Roles Still Open From Last Week 🏃‍♀️

❗️ Note that many VC roles are posted without application deadlines and filled on a rolling basis - if you see one you like, I’d recommend applying within a week, or as soon as possible!

The VC Tech Stack 🔨

In VC, similar processes are repeated over and over — hearing pitches, taking notes, financial diligence, market research, logging deals — you’ll see hundreds (if not thousands) of deals every year, which can be a lot to keep track of. 😭 Luckily, there are tools that can help.

Below I’ve listed a few tools that are widely used throughout the VC ecosystem. If you’re starting a VC role, it may be a good idea to look through a couple of these to familiarize yourself - they all have a very low barrier to learning, and can also easily be learned on the job ☑️

Diligence Tools 🔎

  • Comprehensive database of global private and public companies

  • Data includes company fundraising histories, existing investors, M&A activities, and more

  • Widely used to track companies, map out competitors, complete quick company ‘background checks,’ and supplement diligence

  • Similar to Pitchbook in that it’s a platform offering public and private company data including financing rounds, key team members, and industry trends

  • Between the two, I’d recommend Pitchbook - I’ve found it to have more accessible and up-to-date data

  • Public and private markets database - a go-to if you need quick access to public company data

  • Allows you to easily view public M&A activities, stock performance, financials, annual reports & more on one central platform

Deal Tracking/Sourcing Tools 📒

  • AI-powered e-mail and deal tracking software

  • Enables teams to monitor every interaction they’ve had with a company or individual, upload notes and files, and keep track of meetings

  • Acts as a firm-wide central repository for deal info, including notes and files

  • Startup database platform to easily discover, track, and group deal flow.

  • Easy-to-use platform (one of the best deal tracking/sourcing UI’s I’ve seen!)

  • You can search and tag companies with specific descriptors that don’t exist on other platforms - eg. you can select companies with seasoned executives, prior VC-backed founders, big tech expertise, etc.

Fund Admin/Logistics ✏️

  • Founders often share their pitch decks using DocSend, which typically requires investors to input their email in order to view

  • Founders can track analytics on how recipients interact with their pitch decks, including views, time spent per page, and downloads

  • Platform that simplifies fund admin tasks for VC firms - automates capital calls, distributions, and financial reporting

  • Analytics dashboard to track fund performance metrics and valuations

  • Used by many of the top-tier VC firms

  • Fund admin platform allowing firms to easily launch investment vehicles, syndicate deals, track admin tasks, and simplify financial reporting

  • Friendly interface and pricing for emerging fund managers and small firms

There are many more tools out there, but I thought I’d outline some of the most common ones. 🙂

Coming Soon… Guest Interview Series 👀

We’re starting an interview series!
